10 differences between Bat Trang and other villages

First, Bat Trang is a pottery village. For generations, Bat Trang’s villagers have o­nly paid attention to making pottery, never farm work.

The village’s products are now exported to England, France, the US, the Netherlands, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Taiwan, and Australia.

Second, the institution of the village is marked by blood, not faction. There is a total of 27 clans in the village, of which the 4 largest o­nes in order are: the Pham, Tran, Le, Nguyen. Each clan holds ceremonies to honor the spirits of their ancestors annually.  

Third, the village’s communal house, located right beside the Red River, serves as a place of worship for the 6 tutelary deities, instead of the God of the Pottery Trade.

Fourth, Bat Trang is o­ne of 10 villages in the Thang Long – Dong Do area whose villagers are well-known for their fondness for learning. Bat Trang has 1 first doctoral candidate, 5 doctors and 3 dukes whose names are still honored o­n stone steles in the Temple of Literature in Hanoi and Hue.

Fifth, Bat Trang does not have bamboo bushes – a sign commonly seen in most Vietnamese villages. Sparse vegetations, towering walls of houses in close proximity; winding roads (the widest roads are o­nly around 1.2 m in the Old section).

Sixth, villagers are mostly either a close or distant relatives of each other.  

Seventh, many of Vietnam high-ranking officials have visited Bat Trang, namely the late President Ho Chi Minh, General Vo Nguyen Giap, former President Le Duc Anh, former President Tran Duc Luong, former Secretary General of the Vietnam Communist Party Do Muoi, Vice President Truong My Hoa, the present Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Phu Trong… among other party and state leaders.

Eighth, Bat Trang’s cuisine has many unique characteristics. Local delicacies such as dog meat, bamboo sprout soup, or Chung cake have become very popular nowadays.

Ninth, its customs: Visit to the family’s ancestral graves o­n January 1st, thevillage festival o­n February 14th-15th and the Mother Temple festival o­n September 24th (all in Lunar calendar).
