The Foreign Ministries of Vietnam and Myanmar held their seventh political consultation in the Myanmar capital city of Nay Pyi Taw on May 29.

The Vietnamese delegation to the function was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Dinh Quy while the Myanmar delegation was headed by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Kyaw Tin.

The two sides briefed each other on the respective situations, reviewed their cooperation, and discussed measures and orientations to push up the traditional friendship between the two countries and the two ministries.

They commented on the fruitful relationship and bilaterally and multilaterally close coordination, at regional and international forums.

They agreed to reinforce the exchange of all-level delegations and citizens and effectively implement cooperation mechanisms, especially through the organisation of a meeting of the bilateral cooperation committee in 2017.

At the same time, the two sides will expand their collaboration in such areas as national defence, security, trade and investment.

They put on the table regional and international issues of shared concern and agreed to tighten their coordination in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the UN and other regional cooperation mechanisms.

It is necessary to enhance solidarity and consistency within ASEAN in order to bring into full play the bloc’s centrality, they said.

Regarding the East Sea issue, the two sides consented to handle disputes in the area by peaceful measures and in line with international law.

They affirmed their resolve to work together with other ASEAN member countries and China to soon finalise an effective and legally binding Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).

The eighth political consultation was set to take place in Vietnam in 2018.

On this occasion, Quy paid a courtesy visit to Myanmar's State Counsellor and Minister for Foreign Affairs Aung San Suu Kyi who applauded Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements and pledged to do her utmost to advance the bilateral relationship to the next level and in a more comprehensive manner. -VNA
