Five solutions to boost Hanoi’s socio-economic development

The 18th session of the 13th Hanoi Municipal People’s Council closed on July 17 with the adoption of five solutions to advance socio-economic development in the second half of this year.

The focus will be on taking measures to stem the economic downturn, maintaining economic growth, ensuring social welfare and political security, making thorough preparations for the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi, enhancing administrative reform, practicing thrift and preventing waste and corruption.

The Council set targets for the second half of this year including increasing GDP growth rates to between 7.5-8 percent to reach 5.5-6 percent for the whole year. For services, targets are set at from 8.5-9 percent, for industry and construction from 6-7 percent, for agriculture from 6-7 percent and for export turnover to 10 percent to reach 2008’s level.

Council Chairwoman, Ngo Thi Doan Thanh called on all sectors and localities throughout the country to make greater efforts to reach the set targets.

Over the past six months, in the face of the global economic downturn, natural disasters and epidemics, Hanoi’s economic growth was maintained. Priority was given to ensuring social welfare, caring for families of social policy beneficiaries and the poor and generating more jobs in rural and remote areas. In addition, progress was made in the healthcare, education and training sectors.

However, there remained shortcomings in real estate and land management, environmental protection, and administrative procedures that need to be resolved in the remaining months of this year, Thanh said.

The municipal council also adopted a number of projects to deal with environmental pollution through 2010, enhance family planning and population management through 2010 and increase the quality of pre-school education through 2015./.(VOV)
